Friday March 18th
The NTCRA was fortunate to have the opportunity to take a learning bus tour through some of Frisco’s premier destinations. Participants congregated at IKEA of Frisco and boarded the City of Frisco tour bus headed to the Dallas Cowboys training center and multi-use event center touted as “The Star in Frisco.” Participants were driven through the complex still under construction while listening to a guided tour hosted by Wes Hicks, Facilities Project Manager with the Frisco City Manager’s Office. Riders listened to the background history of the complex, its relationship to the City and school district, the design process and complications during implementation, environmental aspects of construction and final stages, creative design of waste removal and diversion from finished site, as well as getting a preview of adjacent sites coming on board for construction of Frisco’s “5 Billion Dollar Mile.” Those on the tour were excited to learn that 3,990 tons of material had been recycled off the construction site creating a 98.5% diversion rate through this phase of development.
The bus then returned tour attendants to IKEA, where they were met by Joanna McConville and the entire IKEA of Frisco’s environmental team. Attendees were guided through the backend recycling center area of the store and given information on all IKEA’s environmental programs including the recent investment in another Texas wind farm, progressive new packing processes and materials, reuse and upcycling of damaged and returned items, recycling within the store and restaurant, and solar panels adorning the rooftop. The IKEA team then had the opportunity to showcase their sustainable products designed for an entire living space.
Participants enjoyed lunch at IKEA and had an opportunity to mingle and socialize. Unfortunately, due to inclement weather, Champion Waste had to cancel the tour of their Town & Country Construction MRF. However, they have offered all NTCRA members an open opportunity to come up and visit to see how their operations are helping the D-FW metroplex deal with diversion issues on construction and demolition sites. If interested, please contact Paul Kuhar at firstname.lastname@example.org to set up a tour.
